The photo exhibit at Nanjo City had over 2,500 visitors during the 10 day event.
Here are some photos of the exhibit as well as some comments offered by the visitors:
“The pictures portray exactly the theme of the photo exhibit. It held many memories of my parents, especially my mother who went through the war as a young girl from Saipan. She always told me life is beautiful so I must live up to it. People forget the hardship endured by the Okinawan people but Okinawans are always an enduring people. The exhibit should be shown to the younger generation, the students today.”
“It was very good to see how Okinawans persevered after the war. I would like to see a book on postwar Okinawa. Finally, thank you for being English friendly so I could understand.”
“The exhibit is wonderfully arranged. We found the photo`s very interesting and informative. Thank you for providing this opportunity to view this exquisite piece of history.”
“The picture exhibits were very interesting and impressive. The interpreters were most helpful ub explaining the exhibit. Thank you very much, Nanjo City.” .....Visitor from Hawaii.
“Thank you for making us feel so welcome. The picture exhibit and explanation were informative. It does show the enduring spirit of the Okinawans. These pictures are necessary for the young to see what their parents and grandparents endured. What Okinawa is today is built from the past.”
“The exhibit and discussion of postwar restoration was excellent. It was very informative. It gave me a deeper understanding of the problems faced by my relatives in postwar Okinawa. It was wonderful to have the guides explain it all to us in English.”
“The entire pictorial display was very interesting and informative. We especially appreciated and enjoyed the English explanation of the display by Mr. Alex Kishaba. The verbal presentation of Generl Buckner, Dr. Hanna and others were very interesting. We in Hawaii are aware of our Uchinanchu heritage and it is good to see that pictures and other documentation of the past will be used to let younger generations of Okinawans perpetuate our heritage.”
